Towri Sheep Cheeses Open Day

Located just west of Beaudesert, Towri Sheep Cheeses is open to the public on the Saturday 3 December. At 10am sharp they kick things off with a milking demonstration and talk ($5pp), learn all about our family farm and the precious meaning behind ‘Towri’.
Towri guests get to create their own delicious platters using fresh local produce from the Towri Shop and take pride in knowing they are supporting local growers and producers.

Children’s nature activities
Ages 5 to 12 (NOTE: these are FAMILY activities, not a child-minding service. At least one parent or guardian is expected to remain with the children during these experiences)
- Learn a lot while having a lot of fun! Nature games: treasure hunts, puzzles, guessing games, etc. in an outdoor setting and in our Wildlife Ecology Centre.
- Simple ways of sketching common animals (your guide Ronda enjoyed learning and expanding on these techniques as a child herself, and still uses them for quick sketches).
- How to make your sketches and paintings of wildlife and their habitats look more realistic.
- Other nature art and craft
- Seeking small creatures on land and in water and learning about their importance to ecology.

How to be an ecologist
Ages 12 – 16 (flexible)
(NOTE: these are FAMILY activities, not a child-minding service. At least one parent or guardian is expected to remain with the children during these experiences)
- what is ecology?
- what sorts of questions do ecologists try to answer, out of scientific curiosity and for conservation management?
- what are some of the tools used by ecologists, how are they used, and how do we minimise impacts on animals and plants while using them?
- observation and practice of some simple techniques (no handling of animals involved other than perhaps a few harmless invertebrates)
- why is mathematics important in ecology (some basic concepts to aid understanding – no complex exercises)?

Introduction to birdwatching and bird behaviour
All ages (usually 12 and up, but flexible)
Learn about:
- how to seek out birds and identify them from their overall appearance, silhouette, calls and behaviour.
- social interactions, feeding and other behaviours to watch for when viewing southeast Queensland birds
- various books, websites, apps and other aids to birdwatching
- using binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras

- collecting, identifying and pressing specimens

Introduction to the natural history of southeast Queensland
All ages (usually 12 and up)
Learn:
- Why is Australia so different from the rest of the world, and what make the Scenic Rim so special within Australia?
- Geological processes that affected Australia as a whole and the landscapes, climate and soils of the Scenic Rim
- How this has affected our forests, wetlands and other ecosystems and the wildlife that ive there.
- Some important ecological interactions between local plants and animals

Leaders: Ronda and Darren Green
Ronda Green is a research ecologist (PhD in zoology) and has lectured in population ecology, conservation biology, nature tourism and other topics at several universities and has conducted research in three states but primarily southeast Queensland. She has also run a holiday farm with nature activities (as well as horsemanship, care on native and domestic animals and other activities), been ranger in charge of interpretive activities for all ages at Binna Burra, run (for three years) a tertiary course for primary teaching students on nature activities for children, run courses on south east Qld wildlife and introduction to birdwatching and bird behaviour for adult education (TAFE) and led many voluntary talks, activities and excursions for ages from pre-school to adult.
Darren Green has spent his entire life in the Scenic Rim and for over a decade has been leading tours with Araucaria Ecotours. He is a keen nature photographer and has been assisting with ecological surveys since an early age.
In addition to conducting the activities described above, she is available with sufficient notice for presentations, excursions and camps in other regions.
